Carolyn Maloney runs campaign ad ... on Breitbart?

Rep. Carolyn Maloney’s campaign ad has been spotted on the right-wing news site Breitbart, even though Maloney's district is one of the bluest in the nation.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney’s campaign ad has been spotted on the right-wing news site Breitbart.

A Greenpoint resident in Maloney’s House district, who asked to remain anonymous, tipped off City & State on Tuesday.

When President Donald Trump appointed former Breitbart Chairman Steve Bannon as a senior adviser in November 2016, Maloney released a statement criticizing the pick and citing the Anti-Defamation League’s description of Breitbart as “a loose-knit group of white nationalists and unabashed anti-Semites and racists.”

Breitbart appears to use Google AdSense, meaning that the Maloney campaign would not need to have any contact with Breitbart for its ad to show up on the site. But campaigns like Maloney’s are able to “blacklist” sites where they don’t want their ads to appear.

Advertising on Breitbart would be an interesting media strategy for the Maloney. “I don’t think there’s too many right-wing voters in this district,” campaign spokesman George Arzt said. Sure enough, The Cook Political Report rated her district as D+31 – making it one of the bluest districts in the country. Arzt said the campaign blocked Breitbart from showing the ads after City & State made him aware of the issue.

Maloney is facing entrepreneur Suraj Patel in the June Democratic primary. No Republicans have announced.
