Class Divisions

When New York City’s property tax code was overhauled back in 1981, the city and the state set up a system of four property classes.

The new system was intended to make tax levels consistent within each class. However, as a 2013 analysis from the Citizens Budget Commission showed, homeowners pay much lower property taxes.
