Get Ahead by Giving Back: An MPA Can Be a Great Way to Jump-start Your Nonprofit Career
Why just work in public service when you can be a leader in it? Employment growth in the nonprofit sector continues to outpace corporate America: As the community’s demand for direct service increases so too do organizations’ investments in finance, administration and operations management to ensure its efficient delivery, according to the2015 Nonprofit Employment Practices Survey.
Preparing individuals to find their purpose – and professional success – in these positions is the focus of the Master of Public Administration in Public Affairs and Administration (MPA PAA) at Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY), an accredited, nonprofit private college. This unique program of study and practice equips people in public service with the essential executive and analytical skills necessary to be effective leaders.
The accelerated MPA PAA has been designed specifically for working professionals with some related experience in a public agency, not-for-profit or profit-making setting, and provides them with the skills necessary to enhance an organization's efficiency through applied learning. The three-semester program can be completed in as little as one year while working full time.
MCNY is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) so credits awarded in this program are recognized by other accredited institutions as well as approved by, and registered with, the New York State Department of Education (NYSED). In addition, MCNY is an active member of the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA) and adheres to their best practices in the design and delivery of the MPA PAA program.
The program uses a unique purpose-centered education model that combines classroom instruction with applied knowledge and practice gained through constructive action (CA), a workable plan of action for a student's employer that seeks to resolve a particular workplace situation. This project illustrates how well a student has integrated theories from class into the work setting or internship in an effective, relevant, scholarly and clearly documented manner.
An Immediate Impact on Career – and Community
MCNY MPA grad Syrena Huggins’ CA helped this single mom earn a promotion at her employer, CAMBA HomeBase, a nonprofit agency that helps fight homelessness in Brooklyn and on Staten Island.
“My CA focused on improving the internal auditing procedures at CAMBA. I researched the issues and came up with a pilot program that created a more intelligent approach to satisfying funder mandates without sacrificing quality,” explains Syrena, who presented her CA to professionals and academics at the 2014 American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) conference in Washington, D.C. through an MCNY Walton Constructive Action Grant.
The pilot program was so successful that it’s been rolled out throughout CAMBA—and played a role in Syrena’s promotion to program manager for quality assurance for all of the agency’s HomeBase programs.
