In 2009, Leake and Watts, which currently serves more than 8,000 at-risk children, adults and families per year, was dealing with a deficit well over a million dollars and programming that was in crisis and needed corrective action. Over the past few years, under the leadership of Executive Director Alan Mucatel the organization has won the New York Community Trust’s 2014 Gold award for Overall Management Excellence and this year was a finalist for Governance Matters’ Brooke W. Mahoney Award for Outstanding Board Leadership. It made us wonder: What role did the board play in promoting this organization’s growth? Recently appointed board president José Jara talks with NYN Media about what the turnaround process looked like when he joined Leake & Watts in 2011, and some of the best practices that were put in place.
