City & State reshuffles leadership with new publisher, editor-in-chief
City & State is reviving the position of Publisher, with Tom Allon, the company’s President, taking on this role. Allon, a co-owner of the company, will continue to serve as President while assuming the additional Publisher duties. Steve Farbman, City & State’s Chairman and co-owner, will take over some of Allon’s duties as Chief Executive Officer.
City & State has also promoted Jon Lentz to serve as Editor-in-Chief, while Nick Powell is taking on the new title of Features and Opinions Editor. Lentz previously served as Senior Editor, while Powell was the Opinions Editor. Both Powell and Lentz started out as reporters at the publication.
The moves come as City & State is refocusing on three core priorities: the weekly print magazine, the two daily First Read emails and a growing events business. Last year, the company expanded its reach beyond the borders of New York with the launch of City & State Pennsylvania.
The company is also taking steps to integrate City & State’s sister publication, New York Nonprofit Media, including a weekly section on nonprofits in each print edition of City & State magazine.
In an excerpt of a note to the City & State staff last week, Allon wrote:
Now that the new year is well underway, we wanted to formally announce a few management changes at CS.
I will be taking over the role of day-to-day Publisher of City & State in addition to being President of the company. Steve Farbman will become the CEO and he and I will jointly run the company and split duties as we continue to grow.
I will oversee editorial, production, events and sales and Steve will oversee finance, marketing and digital.
This division of responsibilities is being delineated so we have clearer reporting lines on a day-to-day basis. But as partners working closely together, we will still both be involved in all aspects of the business.
Jon Lentz is now the Editor-in-Chief of City & State, and will supervise all aspects of the editorial department. Nick Powell will have an expanded role as Features and Opinions Editor and will be more involved in writing and editing cover stories and investigative pieces for our weekly magazine.
