The Black Institute released a new study on Jan. 26 that identifies barriers to voting imposed by the New York City Board of Elections. A recent lawsuit filed by the Black Leadership Action Coalition prompted the “Mississippi on the Hudson” study. Here are a few takeaways:
- Though voter registration has increased by 11 percent in a two-year period, the BOE only increased poll site locations by 1.4 percent.
- About 7.6 percent of poll sites were discontinued and 922 – 17 percent – of election districts shifted between sites.
- The most affected areas include neighborhoods like Harlem that have a high percentage of racial minorities and the elderly.
