The Latest from Center on Addiction ... United Way of the Greater Capital Region ... an 'Angelmobile'

The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse brought a new name to a May 3 gala. Now known as the Center on Addiction, the New York City-based nonprofit raised $2 million at its 26th anniversary gala attended by more than 700 people, according to a press release. Another May 3 press release states that the new name reflects an increased commitment to advocacy.

“Each day our nation experiences a loss comparable to that of a plane crash – more than 115 people die from opioid overdoses daily. These are our children, neighbors, parents and siblings,” Joseph Plumeri, executive chair of Center on Addiction, said in the press release. “America is hurting. And the weak response to this deadly drug problem is a national disgrace.”

There are only two other industries in the U.S. that are bigger than the nonprofit sector – retail trade and manufacturing. That’s the conclusion of a new report from John Hopkins University that found:

• The nonprofit sector is bigger than manufacturing in most states.
• Nonprofits account for 10 percent of the workforce in half of all states and in all but one, at least five percent.
• Nonprofits account for at least 10 percent of all private workers in 45 percent of counties nationwide that had available data.

A mobile soup kitchen called the “Angelmobile” is feeding 1,000 people per week in North Brooklyn. A new report by News 12 The Bronx shows how the partnership has worked out between the nonprofit North Brooklyn Angels and restaurant owner Josh Cohen.

Peter Gannon is the next president and CEO of United Way of the Greater Capital Region, according to Albany Business Review. He will replace Brian Hassett who left the position earlier this year. Gannon is currently the president of the Arsenal Business and Technology Partnership in Watervliet.
