A new post on the website of the National Council of Nonprofits has the details on “taxing tax exempts and other oxymorons in the new tax law.” This follows a recent letter from the organization to the IRS outlining concerns.

“Two new provisions stand out as particularly oxymoronic: an income tax on nonprofit expenses and a change to the unrelated business income tax (UBIT) rules to make sure the government reaps the financial benefits of any and all successful nonprofit business operations,” reads the latest post.

Those interested in commenting on these provisions should go to this page on the IRS website.

A new mixed-income development in the Bronx opened up on April 30. Lynn’s Place is the first such development by the nonprofit Unique People Services, according to a press release. The project includes space for formerly homeless people and low-income families, including 42 units of supportive housing for those with mental illness. The services are provided per a contract with the New York State Office of Mental Health.

Nonprofit Asphalt Green raised $845,000 at its 23rd annual Big Swim Big Kick event. The funds will benefit the organization’s sports and fitness programming that help more than 50,000 public school students and seniors each year, according to a press release. More than 1,130 kids, ages six to ten, participated in the April 28 event. New York State Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, and New York City Council members Ben Kallos and Keith Powers gave remarks at the event. The press release did not detail whether or not they swam.

The New York City Administration for Children’s Services has a new program to provide foster care children with free dental care. An April 30 press release details the partnership with the NYU College of Dentistry, which will deliver care at the Nicholas Scoppetta Children’s Center. Follow-up treatment will also be made available to children through the program, according to the press release.

Carter Burden Gallery, an offshoot of the senior-centric nonprofit, is having an opening reception for its latest exhibits on May 3. The event will take place at 6 p.m. at the gallery, located at 548 West 28th St. in Manhattan. NYN Media featured the gallery, which only shows work by older artists, this past January.

The city is looking to give the Bellevue Men’s Shelter a face lift, according to the City Record. A solicitation is currently out to renovate the facade and windows of the shelter, which is a primary intake location for homeless single men.
