The New York City Department of Homeless Services plans to renew a contract with Volunteers of America – Greater New York to run a homeless shelter for families, according to the City Record. The proposed renewal would run until June 30 of 2022. A dollar amount for the contract was not included in the post.
Catholic Charities Community Services of the Archdiocese of New York has secured a $530,000 contract with the Department of Social Services/Human Resources Administration. The one-year contract will fund the provision of legal counsel and social services for children in removal proceedings in New York immigration court, according to the City Record.
Ford Foundation President Darren Walker was back on the commencement circuit last week. He delivered a speech to graduates at upstate Sarah Lawrence College on May 16, just a few days apart from another address at Hamilton College.
“It doesn’t matter what you do to pay your actual rent – whether you’re an artist or an activist, a doctor or a lawyer, a professor or program officer at a foundation, or anything else you can imagine. Whatever you do, you must find opportunities to pay your moral rent,” he said in the speech, according to a transcript.

The National Committee of Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP) is urging the New York attorney general to ensure board diversity in a new mega-foundation, according to a press release. The new Mother Cabrini Health Foundation will be the nation’s second largest health conversion foundation, with an anticipated $150 million in annual grants.
The clout that goes along with that money means the new foundation’s board of directors needs representatives from the communities it will serve, according to a formal comment submitted online on May 22.
“The Foundation will be more effective at advancing strategies that lead to better outcomes for marginalized communities if the board of directors includes leadership from community-based organizations with experience and relationships in those communities,” Aaron Dorfman, NCRP chief executive, said in the press release.
