Steve Newman, a former first deputy New York City comptroller, has his own take on city contracts. A solution to the problem of delayed contracts would be for new legislation to require that the city pay interest on late contracts and payments, he said in an email to NYN Media. “Then have the City Comptroller and the Mayor’s Office of Contracts annually publish the interest $ paid out by City Agency. I suspect the problem will decline significantly and maybe disappear.”

A new drug diversion program aims to keep people out of jail in Suffolk County. The Comprehensive Addiction Recovery and Education Program will be unveiled today at a press conference in Central Islip at 11:30 a.m., according to an Aug. 13 press release from Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini. The program aims to help non-violent defendants with addiction problems by dismissing charges against them if they pursue treatment. Among those scheduled to be at the event are: Laurette Mulry, an attorney at the Legal Aid Society of Suffolk County; Jeffrey Reynolds, president of the Family and Children’s Association; and Ed Gialella, program director of the Suffolk County Drug Treatment Court.
