Habitat for Humanity of New York City opened a new building on Sept. 22 in Brownsville, Brooklyn. A Sept. 24 press release states that the Dean Street Residences will provide housing for 15 families. Funding for the project came through a partnership among city agencies, including the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, New York State Homes and Community Renewal, New York State Affordable Housing Corporation, New York State Housing Trust Fund, and the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President, according to the press release. A total of 2,167 people volunteered 19,518 hours of labor to provide the affordable housing for low-income families.

The Alzheimer’s Association of New York City raised more than $115,000 on Sept. 23. Proceeds from the Brooklyn Walk to End Alzheimer’s, held at Cadman Plaza Park in Brooklyn, will go toward Alzheimer’s and dementia research, and will support programs for people dealing with the diseases, according to a press release.

A bit of star power also helped out at the event: Maggie Gray, co-host of WFAN’s “The Afternoon Drive with Carlin, Maggie and Bart,” served as master of ceremonies. Madison Cowan, a former contestant on the Food Network’s “Chopped,” also spoke at the event about his own family’s experience with Alzheimer’s.
The New York City Administration for Children’s Services is looking to extend its contracts with two expert witnesses. A post in the City Record states that Eileen Treacy, Ph.D., and Anne Meltzer, Ph.D., are to receive two-year contract extensions through June 2020 for expertise related to abuse and neglect cases. A monetary total for the contracts was not stated. The Department of Social Services is looking to execute a $5.4 million lease from Harlem United for a building at 15 Mosholu Parkway in the Bronx. The property will be used for permanent housing for formerly homeless families.
The Epilepsy Institute has won a $259,412 contract to provide psychosocial counseling for people with epilepsy on behalf of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Help Social Services Corporation has received a one-year, $6.8 million contract to provide unspecified services at 30 Hamilton Place in Manhattan.
The 2018 GuideStar Nonprofit Compensation Report is out. Among the findings of the 18th edition of the report: Median pay for female, nonprofit CEOs continues to be lower than their male counterparts, according to a Sept. 24 post on the GuideStar blog. Women also tend to lead smaller organizations, although the overall percentage of organizations led by women increased between 2005 and 2016.
One potential 2020 Democratic hopeful was busy in her day job with the Human Services Council.
