Why is childcare so expensive in New York?

The Fortune Society raised $730,000 at an Oct. 29 gala. The Manhattan event honored actor Tracy Morgan – who accepted his award by video – Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., and the law firm Outten & Golden, according to a press release. Nearly 400 people came to the event, with proceeds going to support services for recently incarcerated people.
There is a new president at New Hope Community. Debra McGinness will take over as CEO of the Sullivan County human services organization, replacing A. James Forbes, who retired as CEO and president on Oct. 1. The organization, which is dedicated to helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Bhakar Singh will be the new president and will report to McGinness, according to an Oct. 11 press release. NYN Media CEO Steve Farman is a board member at the nonprofit.
The New York Foundling raised more than $630,000 at a gala held on Nov. 1. Nearly 300 people attended the event, which was hosted by NY1 morning anchor Pat Kiernan. Proceeds will fund more than 30 programs that help disadvantaged children and families, including juvenile justice, child welfare, education, services for single mothers, and foster care youth.
Rising Ground raised nearly $700,000 at an Oct. 29 gala. The event comes at an auspicious time for the child welfare nonprofit, which changed its name from Leake and Watts earlier this year. His vision for the organization was also the subject of an interview with The Chronicle of Social Change.
A new report shows how childcare in New York state is among the most expensive in the nation. Infant care alone ($15,028) can cost more than half of the median income ($26,983) for a single-parent household, according to the report from Child Care Aware of America. New York overall is among the most expensive states for child care for young children, though the state falls out of the Top 10 for costs associated with school-age children. Read the report below:
