More than 100 people from throughout the nonprofit sector gathered on Dec. 4 for the 2018 New York Nonprofit Media TechCon. The midtown Manhattan event included discussions on data analysis, cyber security, youth engagement and other tech trends that affect the sector. There are two new members of the board at the Mental Health Association of Westchester. David Flemister is the accounting managing director at Young & Rubicam and is a graduate of Connecticut College and the current assistant coach for the Iona College rugby team. “As the son of a minister and teacher, giving and community involvement is part of my DNA,” he said in a Dec. 3 press release.

Jason Rimland is a senior counsel at the Manhattan law firm Wuersh & Gering, where he specializes in mergers and acquisitions, venture capital, and financing. He is a graduate of Cornell University and Fordham University School of Law and also serves as the board secretary at the Harold and Elaine Shames JCC on the Hudson. “I have seen firsthand how effective treatment can make a profound and positive impact on one’s life,” he said in the press release.

 

Good Shepherd Services has a received a $1.05 million contract from the Administration for Children’s Services. The money will fund a community partnership program, according to the City Record. The Department for the Aging has awarded two new contracts for the provision of senior services. Bronxworks received a $250,000 contract and the Council of Belmont Organizations received a contract for $133,914.

 

A new video from the New York Foundation highlights efforts to reduce the use of solitary confinement statewide. In it, Victor Pate, New York statewide organizer for the New York City Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement, relates his own experience with solitary confinement and how it has affected his viewpoint on a policy level.

 

Karen Haycox, CEO of Habitat NYC and president of the nonprofit’s community fund, has added a new role to her portfolio. She was elected to the board of the New York State Community Development Financial Institute Coalition, which helps communities statewide get access to capital, according to a Nov. 27 press release.

“Ethical lending provides Habitat NYC with an additional tool that enables both the preservation and development of affordable housing,” she said in the press release. “The creation of our CDFI ultimately reinforces Habitat NYC’s mission of supporting hard-working families across the five boroughs.”

 

Make the Road New York made some noise at a JP Morgan & Chase event on Dec. 4. The direct action was aimed at convincing the financial giant to divest from private prison and immigration detention companies.
