Nonprofits get behind mayoral control of New York City public schools

A coalition of 150 organizations wants the state to fund $20 million for nonprofit housing and legal services. The Communities First Foreclosure Prevention Program has relied on bank settlement funds for the past decade, but that funding will run out by the end of the month, according to a spokeswoman for the Communities First coalition, which includes Asian Americans for Equality, Brooklyn Neighborhood Services, New York Legal Assistance Group, and many other groups. With the Legislature behind the effort to secure to new funding, the remaining X-factor is Gov. Andrew Cuomo – the target of ongoing lobbying efforts.

Elected leaders and immigration advocates want more state funding for census outreach. The requested $40 million investment in the upcoming state budget would go toward ensuring New York gets its rightful share of federal funding and congressional research. A March 19 rally outside City Hall was the latest action on the effort. Rep. Grace Meng, Rep. Jerrold Nadler and New York Immigration Coalition Executive Director Steven Choi were among the big names at the rally.

A group of nonprofits is supporting New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s request to extend mayoral control over city schools for three years. With Democrats in control of the state Senate and Assembly, it had been assumed that getting the extension would be relatively straightforward this year. However, some lawmakers, parents, and advocates are reluctant to grant de Blasio the extension, which allows him to have direct management over city public schools.
About three dozen organizations are pushing back on the mayor’s behalf in an open letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. Signatories of the letter include Hispanic Federation, New York Immigration Coalition, FPWA, Good Shepherd Services, and Sheltering Arms Children and Family Services.
“Under the leadership of Mayor Bill de Blasio, the City’s public schools are the strongest they have ever been, and students in every neighborhood are being supported on their path,” reads the letter. “That is why we urge you to pass an at least 3-year or more extension of mayoral control of the New York City school system to continue this momentum.”
