Sister Paulette LoMonaco received a standing ovation at the Robin Hood Foundation gala on May 13. The Catholic nun and executive director of Good Shepherd Services will retire this year after 50 years at the nonprofit. Nearly 4,000 people attended the Manhattan event, which is the largest nonprofit fundraiser in the U.S., according to a press release. A fundraising total was not available at publication time. Services for the UnderServed will provide supportive services at a new affordable housing complex in the Bronx. A total of 31 supportive apartments are part of the 94-unit building, which is located at 2264 Morris Avenue in University Heights. Of the supportive units, a total of 17 units are reserved for young adults aging out of the foster care system and 14 more for homeless adults struggling with mental illness, according to a press release.

“2264 Morris Avenue shows us what is possible when we collaborate to build solutions that address our city’s most urgent needs,” Donna Colonna, executive director of Services for the UnderServed, said in the press release. “Here, 94 young people, adults, and families now have a home: an essential foundation that makes opportunity, safety, and success possible. S:US welcomes, congratulates, and celebrates with the new tenants of 2264 Morris Avenue.”

 

The Legal Aid Society has received an $11.39 million contract from the New York City Department of Social Services. The money will fund services associated with the Homelessness Prevention Law Project from October 2018 through June 2022, according to the City Record.The nonprofit also received a separate $10 million contract renewal to provide the same services for the same length of time.

CAMBA Legal Services received an $11.52 million contract to provide similar services for the same period of time. Community Access received a $821,874 contract to provide single room occupancy housing for homeless adults on behalf of the department for six years through June 2022.

 

A Poughkeepsie man is walking across the country to raise awareness for veteran homelessness. The Twin Falls, Idaho-based KMVT has the latest on the adventures of naval veteran Tom Zurhellen, who started his journey in Portland, Oregon, and plans to walk until he reaches his hometown. He has so far raised about $12,000 towards a $40,000 fundraising goal. The proceeds will benefit a nonprofit called ZeroVet; Zurhellen plans to finish his nationwide constitutional in August. The Bronx Children’s Museum raised more than $465,000 at a May 7 event in Manhattan. Board member Sunny Hostin of “The View” hosted the event. The event also honored actress Rita Moreno, best known for her performances in “The King and I” and “West Side Story.” Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz, actress Sonia Manzano of “Sesame Street,” and Grammy-nominated drummer Bobby Sanabria also attended the event, according to a press release.
