What is CareerReady NYC?

FPWA has something to say about the bipartisan budget deal reached by President Donald Trump and lawmakers last week. The two-year budget deal raises the federal debt ceiling and avoids significant cuts to social programs. That does not mean, however, that Trump is letting up on efforts to limit the social safety net, according to a July 25 press release from FPWA. Earlier this month, the administration proposed a new federal rule that could take emergency food assistance away from millions of people.

“The need to remain vigilant about ongoing threats to middle- and low-income Americans is made clear by the Trump administration’s new regulatory proposal that would take food away from more than 3.1 million Americans struggling to put food on the table, prevent children from getting school meals, and make it harder for states to administer food assistance,” reads the press release.

FPWA maintains the FPWA Federal Funds Tracker, which analyzes federal funding levels to four New York City government departments, including the Administration for Children’s Services, Department of Social Services and the Department of Youth and Community Development. 

The Fortune Society has a new way to help formerly incarcerated people get jobs. More than 150 people served by the nonprofit got their photos taken on July 24 by a professional photographer to help them find a new self-image. The first ever “headshots day” also included a make-up artist and the chance to dress up in some fancy duds for the photos, according to a press release. “Judging by the demand and the enthusiasm of our clients, we’ll be doing this again for sure,” said Rob De Leon, associate vice president of programs.

A new facility has opened up in the North Country to treat substance abuse. The “All Ways to Recovery” Recovery Center and MHAB Life Skills Campus in Plattsburgh will include deliver free services for addicts and their families, according to a July 24 press release from the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. The associated recovery center is operated by the Champlain Valley Family Center and the Life Skills Campus is on the site of former Clinton Community College dormitories and will be operated by MHAB, which was founded by a former addict-turned-successful businessman who purchased the site, the Press Republican reports.

New York City has launched a new youth development program. CareerReady NYC aims to increase education and economic opportunities for youth through partnerships among the city, nonprofits, schools and businesses. The city’s Summer Youth Employment Program, which serves 75,000 youth ages 14-24, will be key to the new initiative, according to a July 26 press release. 

“Additional components include an expansion of career exploration opportunities from middle school through college, greater emphasis on “early college” learning opportunities for high school students, and a new approach to engaging employers as full partners in the youth workforce system,” reads the press release.

Here are a few highlights laid out in a report that describes CareerReady in detail:

• Youths aged 14-15 will get more project-based learning experiences through six-week structured projects.
• Twenty-seven community-based organizations are partnering with 60 high schools in all five boroughs to help youths get summer jobs and project-based learning experiences.
• NYCHA residents in some developments will have expanded access to opportunities for career readiness, employment experiences and support services.
• The number of foster care, runaway, homeless, and justice-involved young people being served has grown from 1,000 in 2014 to 4,000 this summer.
