NYN Media has taken the 100 largest nonprofits in New York, by revenue, and broken them down by the numbers. IRS 990 filings published by GuideStar were used for this new weekly series.
In this first report, NYN Media starts the countdown with no. 100: New York Blood Center, followed by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at no. 99, and Foundation to Promote Open Society at 98.

The New York Blood Center will be replacing it’s dated facility located on East 67th Street in Manhattan’s Upper Eastside with a 233-ft tower. Despite residents and elected officials who opposed the project over its impact on the community, the City Council still approved a bid to upzone the building, passing it by a vote of 43 to 5. Member deference, which in the past would have deferred such a decision to the local Council member, who in this case was Ben Kallos, an opponent to proposed tower, was bypassed.

- Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

The LLS is a charitable organization that funds research dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma, hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. Recently, high school students across the country decided to help LLS fundraise for cancer research. A high school student in Arizona decided to use their social media skills to raise $50,000 in 50 days for LLS, alongside another student in Washington Township, Pennsylvania, who hopes to raise $100,000, and another group of students in Cleveland hoping to raise $35,000 in seven weeks. LLS brought in over $400 million in funding for cancer research in 2020.

- Foundation to Promote Open Society

The Foundation to Promote Open Society is one of two major foundations funded by liberal financier and billionaire George Soros, alongside the Open Society Foundation. The Open Society Foundation has recently undergone a restructuring, with more than 150 employees taking buyouts and many grantee organizations receiving a final year of funding as they slowly get cut off from any more. The restructuring comes with the hopes of concentrating philanthropy at the global level. The foundation has regional offices in Africa and Latin America.
