New York non-profits among winners of NBCUniversal’s Local Impact Grants
Over $227,000 was awarded to providers in youth education, community engagement and the arts
Five non-profit organizations serving New York, New Jersey and Fairfield County, Connecticut, were awarded more than $227,000 in unrestricted funds as winners of NBCUniversal’s Local Impact Grants.
Since 2018, NBC 4 New York/WNBC, Telemundo 47/WNJU and Comcast NBCUniversal have awarded more than $1.5 million to 37 non-profit organizations supporting sectors of youth education and empowerment, storytelling and community engagement. Among this year’s winners include New York based nonprofit City Living NY, Children of the City and Rebuilding Together Long Island.
“Across the Tri-State, the non-profit community fills an important gap for so many families. Their work fills basic needs, expands access to personal and professional growth and empowers local communities for the better. Our Local Impact Grant winners reflect the very best from this critical service sector and we are proud to support them,” said Cristina Schwarz, president and general manager of Telemundo 47.
Child and youth welfare nonprofit City Living NY were recipients of a $60,000 grant to expand its suite of educational & employment services. These include certification workshops, assistance to youth operated small businesses and education needs. The New York-based nonprofit serves youth who have aged out of the foster care system, by growing support networks to ensure successful transitions into adulthood.
Long-Island based nonprofit Rebuilding Together Long Island were also recipients of a $100,00 grant, which will be invested in construction materials such as lumber for wheelchair ramps, piping for plumbing repair, along with electrical and carpentry materials for home repairs. The nonprofit deploys more than 80 skilled volunteers who provide free repairs for low-income homeowners residing in the Long Island area.
“Our Local Impact Grant winners are impressive. Their efforts are helping families live safely in their homes, connecting children with new educational opportunities and ensuring that the most vulnerable among us can access vital services,” said Eric Lerner, president and general Manager of NBC 4 New York.
Children of the City was also awarded $25,000 towards investments in smaller tutoring environments and for ESL instruction and professional training. The Brooklyn-based nonprofit aims to increase personalized attention to students, to foster higher levels of student engagement and academic success. Awardees also included Josephine’s Place, which offers ESL classes and job training for immigrant women in New Jersey and Fairfield County nonprofit INTEMPO, which provides music classes to low-income children from immigrant and underserved communities.
Since its founding, NBCUniversal’s grant program has awarded $18.5 million to 546 nonprofits across the nation. The 2024 NBCUniversal Local Impact Grants provide $2.5 million in funds to nonprofits based in NBC and Telemundo-owned stations’ 11 U.S. markets, with operating budgets between $100,000 and $1,000,000.
