Podcast: The dog days of summer
With the dog days of summer upon us, Editorial Director Michael Johnson and I took over the microphones at Slant, and this week we sound off on a series of hot political topics we think will interest our listeners.
From Mayor Bill de Blasio’s recent trouble with the teachers union to his ongoing feud with Gov. Andrew Cuomo, we gab about education news and how that could impact the mayor’s re-election chances. While we know Chancellor Carmen Fariña is the keynote speaker at our On Education event tomorrow at Fordham University, we wonder if the accomplished educator will hang around for the mayoral re-election cycle.
MJ offers up a reasonable argument on pay raises for New York state lawmakers, but I just don’t agree with his generosity. Politicos knew the salary, and they still begged voters to give them the job. Let’s see what our listeners have to say after hearing an Assemblyman’s voicemail message about the pay raise that he says he doesn’t want – and yet he’ll take, because he “doesn’t have a rich girlfriend.” Guess who he’s talking about!
We also take a dive into the Hudson River (without getting wet) in an attempt to make sense of why Andrew Cuomo took his staff on a boat trip. We’re sure our listeners have already tried to figure out what the governor was up to with this policy voyage. We hope you have as much fun as we’ve had trying to decipher this Cuomo move.
