Special Podcast: 9/11 through their eyes, Part 1
The forthcoming anniversary of 9/11 stirs up plenty of emotions and unsettling memories for millions of New Yorkers. While the downtown Manhattan area once known as Ground Zero has largely recovered, the scars remain for those who lost family members, friends and coworkers that day. And politically, the 9/11 ripple effect is still being felt to this day, with the international war on terror continuing and the proliferation of terrorist attacks abroad.
In observance of the anniversary of the attacks, we decided to interview several guests with different vantage points of what happened on that fateful Tuesday 15 years ago.
The first part of this special podcast episode features Joe Lhota, the former mayoral candidate and deputy mayor of operations in the Giuliani administration, who was tasked with managing and coordinating the city’s response to the attack. Lhota recounts his 9/11 experience, including relying on his “E.O.W.” (End of the World) binder in City Hall and whether New York City has the capacity to manage a similar terrorist attack today.
NY1 anchor and reporter Cheryl Wills joins us for the second part of this episode, giving an invaluable perspective on what it was like covering the attack on the ground. Wills recalls shuttling back and forth from the World Trade Center site to the NY1 studios to file stories, and how her background as the daughter of a firefighter helped her compartmentalize the emotional intensity of the attacks in order to do her job.
Stay tuned for part two of our special 9/11 podcast, which will be published on Sunday, the anniversary of the attacks.
