Broken windows, broken promises: Bob Gangi on what de Blasio didn’t deliver
With everyone focused on the escalating rivalry between New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and presumptive Republican nominee Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, it’s easy to forget that the mayor has to get past the primaries first. The Slant podcast talked to one of de Blasio’s Democratic challengers, a longtime activist with a vision to reform the NYPD.
Bob Gangi is the former executive director of the Correctional Association of New York, and the co-founder of the Police Reform Organizing Project. He’s running for mayor to implement the progressive policies that he says de Blasio promised but didn’t deliver, particularly those related to police reform.
“It’s not the personnel, it’s the policy,” Gangi explained, saying there is a culture of institutionalized racism at the NYPD. He said de Blasio let the city down by appointing Bill Bratton as police commissioner, by giving into what he claims are failed broken windows policies.
