Corey Johnson

Who’s trending in the NYC Council speaker’s race?

The vote for the New York City Council’s new speaker is scheduled for Wednesday, and the race already appears decided. City Councilman Corey Johnson is poised to assume the role, although not all the candidates have conceded.

Councilman Jumaane Williams has decided to remain until the bitter end, and in a surprise move, Councilwoman Inez Barron announced her last minute candidacy after backlash over Democratic Party leaders not backing a speaker of color.

Among the last-standing candidates, Johnson had Williams beat in social buzz in recent weeks, according to the latest analysis from Global Strategy Group. (Barron is not on Twitter.) Johnson also had a lot of positive mentions of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, which may become an issue for those who want Johnson to act as more of a foil to the mayor than outgoing Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.
