City & State hires Frank Runyeon as senior reporter
City & State has hired Frank G. Runyeon as senior reporter, a new full-time staff position focused primarily on coverage of state politics and government with an emphasis on in-depth features and investigative reporting.
A regular contributor for City & State and its sister publication, New York Nonprofit Media, Runyeon won several top New York Press Association awards in 2016, including the coveted feature story award for his profile of state Sen. Simcha Felder. Runyeon garnered a third place prize for his three-part “Failing Health”series on abuse and neglect in nursing homes in New York.
“Runyeon has the traits that make him a perfect fit for covering Albany: tenacity, resourcefulness and a commitment to getting at the truth – and holding public officials accountable,” City & State Editor-in-Chief Jon Lentz said.
Runyeon has worked on investigative units at National Geographic and NBC News. He has published investigations for The New York Times, including an examination of contamination in the city's wooden drinking water tanks. He was a finalist for the Livingston Award for Young Journalists in 2015.
“We’ve been impressed with Frank’s work for quite some time, and we’re thrilled to add an experienced journalist of his caliber to our award-winning team,” City & State Publisher Tom Allon said. “At a time when other publications are cutting back, we’re investing in the kind of hard-hitting reporting that our readers have come to expect.”
Runyeon also has reported on a wide range of local, national, and international New York news, from street reporting on the raucous 2016 election protests for AJ+ to courtroom reporting on a landmark terrorism finance trial for The Jerusalem Post.
He has a masters from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, with an undergraduate degree in international relations, politics and history at Pepperdine University. Before his career in journalism, he taught in Europe and Asia, and worked for Wall Street clearinghouse DTCC, and for the Council on Foreign Relations.
